I worked as a pediatric RN for over 15 years before I became pregnant with my first child. Like many of you, I didn’t know what to expect. I took classes, read as much as I could, and dreamed about the experience. I learned about the evidence and was planning to deliver at a supportive facility known for its midwifery model of care. I thought I was fully prepared and in control.

But no amount of reading or soul-searching can prepare you for going two weeks past your due date. Walking, eating spicy food, or trying other tricks won’t nudge a body into labor if it’s not ready. When my water finally broke the night before my 42-week induction, I was excited to get checked out and go back home to wait for labor to begin. But my baby had other plans.

She had a bowel movement (passed meconium) in her bag of waters, and her heart rate worried the providers and nurses. I imagined my baby talking to me through the monitor, “Mom, I know you planned and dreamed of having a water birth, but I really don’t feel good, and I need you to change your plans.”

At that moment, my nurse came in with a pill to induce labor. I looked at her and quietly asked, staring at the tub in the room, “I can’t labor in the tub, can I?” She shook her head, pulled up a stool, put the pill down, and held my hand while I cried. She didn’t say anything, just sat with me as I processed what was happening. I hadn’t planned for anything except an unmedicated water birth. I took classes and learned about interventions, but I thought they wouldn’t apply to me—until now. I realized my baby needed me to change my mindset, and to do it quickly. That RN stayed with me while I took a few deep breaths and finally asked, “Ok. What do we do now?”

That day, I learned we can’t control everything in life. Life sets a path, and we have to adjust as we go. While we can’t control every situation, we can choose how we respond. This was my first lesson in parenting: we are responsible for keeping our babies safe and making decisions for them, even before we meet them. Childbirth is a powerful place to learn this lesson.
