I was a pediatric RN for over 15 years when I became pregnant with my first child. And like many of you, I knew nothing about what to expect. So I took classes, I read, and I dreamed. I learned about the evidence and I was delivering at a very supportive facility. I thought I was completely prepared and in control of my own destiny. 

Unfortunately, no amount of reading and soul searching prepares you for going 2 weeks beyond your due date. No amount of walking will put you into labor. No amount of spicy pizza, sex, or dates will make your body do something it’s not ready to do. When my water finally broke on the eve of my 42 week induction date, I was excited to get checked out and go home and wait for labor to begin. But my baby had other plans.

She had had a bowel movement in her bag of waters. Her heart rate was not reassuring to her providers or nurses. I could hear my baby speaking to me through the monitor, “Mom, I know you planned and dreamed of having a tub birth, but I really don’t feel good and I need you to change your plans”. It was at that moment that my nurse walked in with a pill that was to induce my labor. I looked at her and asked quietly, as the tub in the room stared me in the face, “I can’t get into the tub, can I?”. She quietly shook her head, pulled up a stool, put the pill down, and held my hand while I cried. She said nothing. She just sat with me while I silently processed this reality. I hadn’t planned for anything else BUT an unmedicated water birth. Yes I took classes. Yes I learned about interventions, but I also believed they didn’t apply to me. Until now. I heard my sweet baby girl asking me to change my mindset, and to do it quickly. That RN held that space for me while I took a few deep breaths and finally asked “Ok. What do we do now?”.

I learned that day that we can’t control “life”. Life lays a path and it’s our job to zig and zag with it. I learned that while we can’t control everything, we have control over how we react to any given situation. It was my first lesson in parenting. We are charged with keeping our babies safe. To make decisions on their behalf, as their parent, before we ever even meet them. Childbirth is an all too real place to learn this lesson.

I’ve been teaching since 2007 and I believe Evidence Based Birth® has created a new and refreshing way to help couples write their own roadmap using the evidence, the resources of their providers, and their values as their guide. I’m proud and excited to help mentor couples to get equipped, get answers, and get empowered.
