What is a Doula?

The word “doula” has come to refer to “a person experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the birthing person and their family unit before, during, and just after childbirth” (Mothering the Mother, by Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus). Doulas come from all walks of life and may, or may not, have had children themselves. We see this practice in many native cultures where the village community comes together to surround the birthing person in labor and provide them with comfort, food, and nurturing care while giving birth. These “labor supporters” are at all stages in their life span, from children to the elderly, proving that labor support knows no age boundaries.

Doulas support all members of the birth family, as well as their providers at her birthing facility:

  • The person giving birth needs a doula to allow them to feel nurtured, connected, and safe as they move through the various stages of labor and birth.

  • Birth partners need doulas to help them relax, believe in the process, and develop confidence in their ability to support their partner in the birthing process. Birth is not a “two-person job” for just the birthing person and their partner. The hours can be long and emotionally trying. Physically supporting someone in labor can be exhausting. The partner also needs encouragement, naps, bathroom breaks, and nourishment. The doula shares the labor support role with the birth partner, to provide the uninterrupted support that the birthing person needs throughout their experience.

  • Nurses, midwives, and doctors need doulas because they cannot sit with the laboring person continuously. Doulas provide the emotional and physical support so the providers can focus on the medical needs of the birthing person and keep them and their baby safe.

From RN to Doula

I have been a labor & delivery nurse and pediatric nurse since 1990 (we were the last class at the University of Pittsburgh to wear “nursing caps”). I spent the last part of my nursing career at the Sutter Davis Birthing Center, practicing patient-centered care in an evidence-based, Baby Friendly facility that supports normal birth.

In 2011, I started Birth Fusion to bring my real-life experiences and passions to families in a very personal way. I felt my experience as an RN could benefit families as I personally guide them through a process that often takes many twists and turns. I have witnessed hundreds of births as a nurse and doula, and I use these experiences to offer perspective and familiarity to an often unfamiliar experience. I do this from a clinical perspective, but also from a “best friend” and “nurturing” perspective, to allow you to feel safe and supported in the decisions you make in your journey towards parenthood.

I have seen all forms of birth, including vaginal, cesarean, water, twin, pre-term, still, and vaginal breech births, with many different family members involved, from toddler siblings to elderly grandparents and great-grandparents. I’ve witnessed unmedicated births, inductions and augmentations, as well as beautiful births with an epidural, as well as beautiful and joyful cesarean births. I have faith in this process and I know how to keep you and your support team focused on the goal of a safe and memorable birth.

What kind of doula are you? What sets you apart?

I always loved it when my girlfriends were pregnant. I couldn’t help but try to make them laugh whenever I could.

We had the dumb luck of attending Matt Cain’s Perfect Game in 2012. This was the last inning. You could have heard a pin drop.

We had the dumb luck of attending Matt Cain’s Perfect Game in 2012. This was the last inning. You could have heard a pin drop.

This is a question you should ask of every doula you interview..

…Because inviting someone to one of the most intimate experiences of your life is a very personal decision. Doulas come from all walks of life. Some are very spiritual about the birthing person’s metamorphosis through the childbirth process and their connectivity to the earth. Some are new to the profession and are very excited to work with you but are still learning about the many variations in normal birth. There are doulas that represent more of a parental figure in their nurturing and warmth. Amazing doulas come from all walks of life.

I’m an oddity. I’ve seen enough to get it, but always respect the fact that human nature will never allow it to be routine. I’m old enough to be a mother to some of you (barely), but not old enough to be a grandmother to any of you… yet. I’m an avid baseball/dance mom and active in our local Davis Little League community. I’m a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. On any given day in the spring and summer, you’ll catch me scorekeeping a little league or professional baseball game. I’m a River Cats and Giant’s fan (a gamer babe to those who know what that is).

I wear my Pennsylvania roots proudly, I’m the daughter of a Navy Veteran (and I swear like him too), and I learned the art of self-deprecation from my brothers. I have a sense of humor for which I’m rarely ashamed. I have the loudest laugh in the room and can poke fun, giggle, and encourage light-heartedness when it’s needed in labor. I can also easily find peace and tranquility in birth and respect its “sanctuary”. I have an empathic heart and a shoulder to cry on whenever it’s needed (laughter and tears are some of the best tension buster tools we have in labor). I command a presence when I need to, and I can blend into the background when you and your partner have found your rhythm. I am comfortable being assertive to help your family support you, and I am comfortable sitting back and allowing you to completely drive the bus. I just prevent you from driving off the cliff. This ability to effortlessly shift my support to your needs can only come with the vast experiences that I’ve had in the birth arena.

I would NOT classify myself as one of the earthy, spiritual doulas. There is a place for them, no doubt. I’m more of a practical, real-life friend who will laugh with you in the Nugget check-out line when the guy who cut in front of you in a hurry slams into the glass door with his cup of coffee (physical humor gets me every time). We have fun. We relax. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We live in the moment. We bring your baby into this world in the most normal and safest way possible, with current evidence as our guide. We celebrate and memorialize the moment your wet baby is placed on your chest and you hear that beautiful cry for the very first time. Births are like snowflakes and I will never tire of the life lessons that I take away from each one. That is what sets me apart.

Wedding days and births have so much in common. They will be the last memories to leave us and ones we plan for for months, if not a lifetime. You get one shot to get it right, and sometimes, the gods don’t play nice. My outdoor Napa wedding turned …

Wedding days and births have so much in common. They will be the last memories to leave us and ones we plan for for months, if not a lifetime. You get one shot to get it right, and sometimes, the gods don’t play nice. My outdoor Napa wedding turned into the “Fog Bowl 2004”. A thick cloud settled in over the mountain top and everything was soggy and wet. It was freezing in October. My wedding planner (very akin to a doula) reminded me to not forget why we were there. It wasn’t for the beautiful candle-lit flowers that wouldn’t light. It wasn’t for the photos (that turned out eerily beautiful). It was a memory and a promise, much like the day of your birth. And my planner gave me this pearl - “Keep laughing. If you smile, everyone will smile with you, forget about the weather, and the day will be what it was meant to be”. I did that and here is a photo of me warming up to that idea. And like birth, sometimes we have to change our plans. Take a moment, adjust, lean on your support team, and then smile, and everyone will smile with you.
